In other words, the study of joint attention is the study of the human cognitive and neurocognitive capacity for social reference (Bruner, 1975; Bates, Camaioni, & Volterra, 1975; Mundy & Newell, 2007; Tomasello, Carpenter, Call, Behne, & Moll, 2005; Mundy & Newell, 2007).
