Till very lately, pragmatics has been constrained to the research of up to date spoken language whereas old linguistics has studied old texts and language swap in a decontextualized manner. This has now substantially replaced and students from worldwide are attempting to construct a brand new theoretical framework that integrates contemporary advances either in pragmatics and in old linguistics.

For example, array expressions define an independent computation for each el ement of the result; the same can be said for every index value in a FORALL statement. Similarly, the iterations of an INDEPENDENT loop can also b e thought of as potentially parallel. Array intrinsics and HPF library operations have degrees of parallelism that vary by the type of intrinsic. Table 2. 1 shows the best performance for these opera tions on a Concurrent-Read, Exclusive-Write Parallel Random Access Memory (CREW PRAM) machine (one of several popular theoretical models).

The communication volume is the same as a n array assignment from an array with the original alignment to another array with the new alignment. The REDISTRIBUTE directive changes the distribution for every array al igned to the op er and of the RED I STRIBUTE. Therefore, its cost is similar to the cost of a REALIGN on many arrays simultaneously. Compiler analysis may sometimes detect that data movement is not needed because an array has no values that could be accessed; such analysis and the resulting optimiz ations are beyond the scope of this book.

This allows parallel up dates of both the rows and columns of x, at the cost of two all-to-all communica tion operations . It corresp onds to increasing T c o m m and T par in order to eliminate T s e ri a l . This strategy works well if the target system has a fast t r anspose operation an d enough memory to store the transp osed array s .
