Example text

Stirner views the object of the game of human relations to be possession of the other, and it has to be that way if one is to own oneself. One uses the power one has to enjoy life, but should one’s power not be enough for something one wants, there is no reason to upset oneself about it. 28 28 Existentialism and Romantic Love Creating oneself Owning oneself involves realizing that one creates oneself and one’s world. 29 The individual is never static but rather continuously in a process, always transcending, always creating a new self and constantly choosing identities and transforming oneself.

Thus, according to Stirner, the only commitment one can make without compromising authenticity (ownness) is to oneself. In leaping to oneself, one does not subordinate oneself to any higher entity or external source of values. Thus, one takes up residence within the abyss of a world without given meaning. The commitments one makes are only to upholding oneself as a free and creative nothingness, directed toward one’s chosen ends. However, Stirner’s approach is beyond affirming one’s freedom because he assumed his freedom to begin with and did not treat it as a value to be adopted or something to strive toward.

All relationships, including loving ones, are power relationships, according to Stirner. The unique one appropriates a lover just as any other treasured possession from which he derives pleasure. Stirner’s formulation of a loving relationship is based on appreciation of enjoyable, charming, and unique qualities in another human. Love as a duty or moral obligation is indifferent to those qualities and thus devalues the individual; it is also a recipe for a miserable loving relationship. Stirner rightly raises the issue as to why anyone would want an unenjoyable and uninteresting loving relationship, characterized by sacrifices and obligations without any benefit to the individuals.
